The 'paying for visa sponsorship' framework introduces new laws that allow the Department to take action in instances where 'paying for visa sponsorship' conduct is identified or suspected. The framework aims to:
- protect overseas workers from exploitation or extortion by reducing incentives to participate in a 'paying for visa sponsorship' arrangement
- help ensure there is a 'level playing field' so that vacancies are filled by candidates with the most appropriate skills or background, rather than the person who is willing to pay the most for employment
- alleviate downward pressure on Australian wages and conditions that may result from 'paying for visa sponsorship' arrangements
- stop sponsors from obtaining an inappropriate financial gain and competitive advantage through selling sponsorship, employment and permanent residence.
