​Annual Report 2017–18 available

The Annual Report for 2017-18 was tabled this week in Parliament and is now available on the Home Affairs internet for your viewing. The Annual Report provides an overview of the achievements for the Department and ABF over the last year.

Key achievements include:

  • establishment of the Home Affairs Portfolio, bringing together six agencies and the Department of Home Affairs of 14,416 staff
  • establishment of the Commonwealth Transnational, Serious and Organised Crime Coordinator
  • establishment of the Counter Foreign Interference Coordinator
  • establishment of the Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Forum for Commonwealth agencies
  • establishment of the National Resilience Taskforce to lead nation-wide reforms to reduce the impact and financial burden of disasters on the community and economy
  • the introduction of new transport security regulations, such as new inorganic powder restrictions, in response to emerging high risks
  • the introduction of a new Temporary Skill Shortage visa with processing times over 28 per cent quicker than the visa it replaced
  • improved digital access, with over 90 per cent of all visa applications lodged electronically and online lodgement expanded to include China and India
  • delivering the Humanitarian Program with 16,250 permanent resettlement places offered to refugees
  • processing of a record number of international travellers and cargo, including:
    • more than 46 million international air and sea travellers, with more than 24 million air travellers processed using automated SmartGate technology
    • more than 50 million air cargo consignment
    • more than 3 million sea cargo manifests 
  • detection of a range of drugs and prohibited items, including:
    • more than 42,000 illicit and restricted drugs at the border
    • over 110,000 detections of illicit tobacco, including over 215 tonnes of loose leaf and molasses tobacco and over 235 million cigarettes
  • increasing the level of  revenue collection to $19,266.8 million
